The Institute of Anthropology has been initiated through the efforts of Prof. Dr. Francisc I. Rainer (1874-1944), head of the Anatomy department (1919-1941) at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Farmacy from Bucharest. Initially a Museum and Laboratory of Anthropology (since December 1939) at the University of Medicine, the Institute becomes autonomous within the University of Bucharest, under the current title (law 822, November 13 1942). With subsequent subordiantion to the Ministry of Education, then the Ministry of Health, and currently under the patronage of the Romanian Academy, the Institute has been coordinating a wide spectrum of fundamental and applicative bio-medical, socio-cultural and paleoanthropological research. The Institute hosts one of the largest osteological collections in Europe.
